For Eau Claire Memorial High School senior Cooper Jesperson, sports have always been more than just games—they've been a way of life. As a dedicated basketball and baseball player, he’s spent countless hours refining his skills and competing at a high level. But on January 27, 2024, his journey took an unexpected turn when he suffered a left tricep injury that temporarily took him out of action.
The road to recovery was anything but easy, but Jesperson embraced the challenge with the same work ethic that has made him a standout athlete. His rehab process was extensive, requiring three to four sessions a week, supplemented by daily icing and heating to manage swelling and discomfort. Early on, the focus was on regaining his range of motion, ensuring that his body could move properly without restriction. This was followed by soft tissue and scar massage, which helped improve circulation, break up tightness, and reduce pain in the affected area. Once mobility was restored, the emphasis shifted to strengthening—gradually rebuilding the muscles needed to support his return to sports.
Although the initial stages of rehab went smoothly, with mobility coming back quicker than expected, there were still obstacles to overcome. "The toughest part was dealing with tendinitis as I started getting back into activities," Jesperson explained. The increased workload on his body caused lingering discomfort, making it clear that recovery wouldn’t be an overnight process. However, with persistence and a well-structured therapy plan, he continued to make steady progress.
Northwoods Therapy played a crucial role in his rehabilitation, providing expert guidance and tailored exercises that allowed him to recover as efficiently and safely as possible. "They gave me great exercises for PT and all the resources I needed to get back as fast as possible," Jesperson said. Their hands-on approach ensured that every step of his recovery—from mobility work to strength training—was handled with care, helping him regain confidence in his body.
Throughout this process, Jesperson was reminded of just how much he loved competing. His favorite high school sports memory remains winning the sectional semifinal in baseball as a freshman, a moment that solidified his passion for the game. But this injury also gave him a new perspective—one that he’ll carry with him far beyond high school. "I’ve learned not to take anything for granted and to make the most out of every opportunity," he reflected.
Now, with his rehab behind him and his senior year ahead, Jesperson is looking forward to the future. He has opportunities to continue playing basketball and baseball at the collegiate level, a testament to his resilience and dedication. Although his injury was a setback, it also reinforced his determination, strengthening him physically and mentally. No matter where his athletic career takes him next, one thing is certain—he's ready for whatever comes next.
