The Varsity Journal's inaugural Rehab Player of the Month is Bo Vollrath - a dual sport athlete and senior at Fall Creek High School. During his basketball and football career at Fall Creek, Bo has earned several awards, including High Honorable Mention for the 2022 -2023 AP All-State Team, being selected to the WBCA 2023 Division 4 Boys Basketball All-State Team, was the Player of the Year in the Western Cloverbelt Conference two years in a row. He is currently in second place in all-time career points (1,366) for the Fall Creek boy’s basketball team. Bo’s favorite high school sports memory has been playing the sports he loves with his friends because “they are fun people to play with and I am lucky to have them,” he said.
Bo’s senior year of high school didn’t exactly play out like he thought it would. During the 50th career matchup between Highway 12 rivals Fall Creek and Altoona, the Crickets led 25 - 0 in the third quarter when suddenly, Vollrath was lying on the sidelines and being urgently escorted off the field. Bo would later go on to get x-rays and learn that he had a broken fibula and torn all of the tissue between his fibula and tibia. Through surgery, Dr. Brent Carlson of Chippewa Valley Orthopedics was able to repair Bo’s torn tissue, but this was only the first step in his recovery process. After his surgery, with the help of Northwoods Therapy in Altoona, WI, Bo underwent a 6-week physical therapy program that included manual techniques, range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, agility/plyometric training, and an at-home exercise program. “Therapy went great for me,” Bo said, “I appreciate all of the therapists who helped me along the way … I am especially grateful for Amy Kurtz because she reached out to our family with a helping hand and helped us figure out where to go for surgery and physical therapy.” His therapy program aimed to strengthen his lower extremity muscles enough to eventually return to his full range of motion and sports. Bo played in his first basketball game post-therapy on January 5th against Bloomer.
